Join us on Wednesday, March 2 at 6 pm for Intimate Stranger, a psychological thriller about a single mother’s search for her missing son. A rare fiction film by award-winning documentary director Mayu Nakamura, it features a female protagonist who is over 30, making it a real rarity. Wary of “Ore, ore” fraudsters, Megumi (Asuka Kurosawa) nevertheless responds to a message she receives from a young man named Yuji (Fuju Kamio), who claims to know the whereabouts of her son, Shumpei. Yuji gives her some personal belongings from Shumpei, but he also seems to have information he’s not divulging. Hoping to learn more despite being suspicious about his intentions, Megumi allows Yuji to stay with her. A strange bond between these two broken souls begins to develop, as one attempts to extract secrets from the other. Soon, the roles of predator and prey begin to flip-flop. Nakamura and Kurosawa will join us for the Q&A session. (Intimate Stranger, Japan, 2021, 96 minutes, in Japanese with English subtitles).
